What Does a Doula Do?

If you’ve stumbled across this page, chances are someone has mentioned the word “doula” to you and you’re wondering what on earth it actually means — don’t worry, you’re not alone! It’s one of the questions I get asked most often, and honestly, it’s one of my favourite things to explain.

So, let’s get into it.

A doula is not a midwife

First things first — I want to be really clear about this. A doula is not a medical professional. I won’t be monitoring your baby’s heartbeat or doing any clinical checks. That’s your midwife’s incredibly important job, and they are brilliant at it.

What I do is everything around that.

Think of me as your constant, your calm in the storm, your person. I’m the one who’s been by your side since you were pregnant, who knows your birth preferences inside out, who holds your hand (literally, if that’s what you need), and who makes sure you feel seen, heard and supported throughout the whole experience.

So what does that actually look like?

During pregnancy, I’ll meet with you and your partner multiple times to get to know you properly — your hopes, your worries, your questions. No question is too small or too silly. I’ve heard them all and I love every single one of them. We’ll talk through your birth preferences, explore your options and make sure you feel genuinely confident going into your labour, not just told to “trust the process.”

During labour and birth, I’ll be there with you — and I really mean there. Whether your birth takes place at home, in a birth centre or in hospital, I’ll be by your side. I can help with positions, breathing, comfort measures, and I’ll also be a calming presence for your partner, who often needs just as much reassurance as you do.

After your baby arrives, my support doesn’t just stop at the door. The postnatal period — sometimes called the fourth trimester — is something I care deeply about. Those first weeks are precious and overwhelming in equal measure, and having someone to come to your home, make you a cup of tea, hold the baby while you shower, and just be there can make the most enormous difference.

Why do people choose a doula?

Because continuity matters. The NHS is incredible, but the reality is that midwives are stretched, shifts change, and you may not know the person supporting you through labour at all. I will never be a stranger to you. By the time your birth comes around, we’ll have built a real relationship — one built on trust, honesty and genuine care for your wellbeing.

I truly believe that every woman deserves to feel empowered through her birth experience, whatever that looks like. That’s not just something I say — it’s why I do this.

If you’d like to chat about whether a doula might be right for you, I’d love to have a discovery call. No pressure, no obligation — just a conversation. 💛
