Hiring a Doula in Surrey: What to Expect at Your First Meeting

If you’ve been quietly Googling “doula Surrey” for the past few weeks and you’re hovering over the contact button wondering what actually happens when you get in touch — this one’s for you.

I know that first step can feel a bit strange. You might not be entirely sure what a doula does. You might not know whether you can afford it, or whether it’s really “for people like you,” or whether this is all going to feel a bit earnest and overwhelming.

Let me try and make it feel a bit less unknown.

Step one: the discovery call

When you get in touch with me, the first thing I’ll suggest is a discovery call. This is completely free, completely informal, and there is absolutely no obligation whatsoever. It’s not a sales pitch. It’s a conversation.

We’ll usually talk for around 20 to 30 minutes. You can ask me anything — what I do, how I work, what packages look like, whether I’m available around your due date. I’ll ask you a bit about where you’re at, what matters to you, what you’re hoping for. If it feels like a good fit, we’ll talk about next steps. If it doesn’t, that’s fine too — I’d genuinely rather you find the right doula for you than feel pressured into working with me.

Step two: the initial meeting

If you’d like to move forward after the discovery call, we’ll arrange to meet in person. This usually happens at your home, which I find works better for most families — you’re comfortable, your partner can be there, and we can have a proper conversation over a cup of tea.

This is where we really start to get to know each other. We’ll talk about your pregnancy, your hopes for your birth, any worries or questions you have, your experience so far, your birth setting — hospital, home birth, birth centre — and what kind of support you’re looking for from me.

There’s nothing you should prepare for this meeting. You don’t need to have a birth plan written or have done any research. Come as you are.

What if I’m not sure a doula is right for me yet?

That’s completely fine, and honestly quite common. Most people who contact me are somewhere on a spectrum between “I definitely want this” and “I’m curious but not convinced.” Both are great starting points.

The initial meeting often clarifies things — either you leave feeling like this is absolutely what you want, or you leave having had a useful conversation that’s helped you figure out what you do need, even if it’s something different.

What happens after that?

If you decide you’d like me to be your doula, I’ll ask you to complete a booking form and pay a small deposit to secure your place. From that point, you’ll have my number and we’ll be in regular contact throughout your pregnancy. There are no silly questions, no such thing as contacting me too much, and no situation where you’ll feel like a bother. That’s genuinely what I’m here for.

One more thing

I want to say this clearly: doula support is not just for people who have complicated births or specific risk factors or a lot of money to spend. It’s for anyone who wants to feel genuinely supported through one of the biggest experiences of their life. Packages can be tailored to different budgets and different needs, and if cost is a barrier, it’s always worth having a conversation about what might be possible.
